Adenocarcinoma of the colon associated with hyperplastic polyposis.

چکیده
A 24-year-old woman presented with a history of chronic watery diarrhea associated to abdominal pain and weight loss. Her father had died of cirrhosis at the age of 47 and her grandmother had died from colorectal cancer at the age of 69. A colonoscopy revealed multiple sessile polyps scattered throughout the colon (ranging from 3 to 15mm), and a large, villous looking lesion located in the ascending colon (Fig. 1). The lesion was biopsied and several polypectomies were performed. The histology was compatible with an adenoma with high grade dysplasia and hyperplastic polyps, respectively. Total colectomy with ileo-rectal anastomosis was performed. The specimen analysis revealed a mucinous adenocarcinoma of the ascending colon and the existence of 70 hyperplastic polyps and serrated adenomas in the remaining mucosa, none of which presented high grade dysplasia or carcinoma. Molecular analysis of the adenocarcinoma revealed a microsatellite stable tumor, BRAF mutation and CpG Island Methylator Phenotype (CIMP high). No KRAS mutation was identified. Genetic analysis was negative for germline mutations in APC and MYH genes.

Inverted hyperplastic polyposis of the colon.
AIMS To describe and evaluate two apparently unique cases of inverted hyperplastic (metaplastic) polyposis of the colon. METHODS The cases were analysed by standard histopathological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical techniques and the findings compared with those of regular hyperplastic polyps of the colorectum. RESULTS Both patients were middle-aged men with concurrent adenocarcinom...
متن کاملInvasive adenocarcinoma arising from a mixed hyperplastic/adenomatous polyp and synchronous transverse colon cancer
An admixture of hyperplastic and adenomatous components within the same polyp is unusual. Adenocarcinoma arising from a mixed hyperplastic/adenomatous polyp (MHAP) occurs even more rarely. We report the first case of a 59-year-old male who presented with invasive adenocarcinoma originating from a MHAP at a sigmoid colon and synchronous transverse colon cancer.

Case history A 68 year old Caucasian woman presented with a lump in her right groin and lower abdominal pain. No changes in bowel habit or other bowel symptoms were reported. Previous medical history included endometrial cancer diagnosed at age 57, treated by hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. The family history was negative for desmoids, colon polyps and cancer. By CT scan, a 4 ...
متن کاملIs Colorectal Cancer an Unusual Malignancy among Iranian Children?
Dear Editors: Adenocarcinoma of colon and rectum is the second most common cancer of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract in children. The development of carcinoma of colon in general appears to be associated with several predisposing factors such as familial polyposis, hereditary non-polyposis syndromes, ulcerative colitis, previous ureterosigmoidostomy or radiation therapy and dietary factors (hig...
متن کاملMUTYH-associated colon disease: adenomatous polyposis is only one of the possible phenotypes. A family report and literature review.
AIMS AND BACKGROUND The MutY human homologue gene (MUTYH) is responsible for about a quarter of attenuated familial adenomatous polyposis. Occasionally, it has been associated with hyperplastic polyps and serrated adenoma. We report a family where the same MUTYH mutation determined four different phenotypes, including a case of hyperplastic polyposis syndrome. PATIENTS AND METHODS A family wi...
